Hide LinkWithin Gadget from Homepage

Find it annoying and a little intrusive to have Linkwithin widget displaying below every post? Well, I have a solution for you.

First if you have any existing Linkwithin Widget installed, remove them, you can click on the wrench button and click remove. Or if you have removed the wrench button (I will post a tutorial on that some day) you can go to Layouts and remove it.

Now we can begin:
You might want to backup your template first before making any changes, now look for the </body> tag and paste this code above it:

<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
REPLACE THIS WITH LINKWITHIN CODE
</b:if>

Now go to the linkwithin website by clicking here: LinkWithin. and fill in your email and your website and your preferences.
Important note: For platform, choose "Others" and click get widget.
Once the code is displayed, copy it and replace the LINKWITHIN CODE with that code and click save templates. Done! Now it should look like this:

'

LinkWithin Widget should now only display on the post itself.

Hope you enjoy this article and if you like it please take 5 minutes to share it with everyone! We would really appreciate it.
Any comments for help or feedback are welcomed.

Should I Dofollow? or Nofollow? (SEO)

Ever heard of these two terms? What are they exactly and should you "DoFollow" or "NoFollow"?
This is actually part of link building and if you have seen my Link exchange page, you should probably understand on Link building. The links you find there are all a "DoFollow" links.
So what is "DoFollow"? DoFollow means that you allow the search engines to crawl that particular link, for example this link:

All links are by default "DoFollow", however, there might be people who doesn't want to let search engine spiders to crawl all over their links. So they will add a "NoFollow" tag and a "NoFollow" tag looks like this:
rel="nofollow"
An example on how people integrate it with their links:

So if you are planning on link building, make sure the link that you exchanged with the webmaster does not add a "NoFollow" tag. I mean it would be unfair if your link exchange partner decides to steal some traffic from you right?

It is easy to check using a HTML checker or just click on inspect element (Google Chrome) or View page source (Firefox) on your web browser by right clicking it:
Google Chrome example

Firefox example
So if that is the case, why would you still want to offer a "NoFollow" tag? Well, if you have read my last few posts,on Extension on my VIP post on how to start a blog shop. You would have noticed that I discussed something about having ads will pull your website rankings down if Google bot decide to treat that as a "natural" link.

So here are some reasons that the webmaster will want to add a "NoFollow" tag:
  • The webmaster doesn't want his link to be crawled on your website (An extremely rare case)
  • Google ads or perhaps paid links (Normally paid links will be ads)
  • Comment section (You don't want your commentators to have links back to their site, If you allow, Google bots will probably treat them as natural links)
  • Popular sites such as Google or Facebook (Probably not so much of the case but some people doesn't like to have a "DoFollow" on such sites)
  • Having an example link (Like you want your bloggers to download something or visit a website to get what they need, webmasters will normally add a "NoFollow" tag so that they will not link back to whatever website they are linking to.)
All these stated above are really a personal preference, if you don't want a link to be crawled, just use the "NoFollow" tag.

So what do you think? Should all websites be "NoFollow" free or up to their decisions?
Drop a comment below and tell me what you think!

8 ways to promote your Blog !

Attracting visitors to your blog is not too hard,  other than just providing good content, you will also need to promote it if you would like to attract visitors to your blog. So here are some useful ways of attracting readers. (8 ways to be exact)

1. Linking to other post:
What does does imply? It means that finding a similar post of yours, from another blog and request them to leave your post link under their post in exchange for your post link to be visible under their post. This is a great way of promoting your post to other users who might want to know more about the particular subject your are writing about. At the same time, this method raises the visibility of your blog.

2. Social Networking
This seems like to be the most obvious way of promoting your blog. But relatively hard as well, for one thing, your readers might not be too keen on promoting for you. The best way is through creating a Facebook page and let the followers to help spread the word of your blog to other people. Again, not all followers might be too keen on doing so, but it is a great way of bringing traffic and interested readers into your blog post.

3. Social Bookmarking (Digg, StumbleUpon)
Digg and StumbleUpon are two great places to submit your articles to. However be warned of a few things when doing so. Is that you will add unique and interesting articles to these two sites, especially Digg which allows comments and ratings. When you submit every single little article you have to them. Some people may consider this as spamming and you could be flamed. StumbleUpon do not allow comments so you won't risk too much of getting flamed or defamed on your content, still be careful though, you don't want to lose readers (Not at this stage).

4. Internalize your links
Having links for related post links within a post helps by increasing page views and can help with SEO. There are some useful widgets for bloggers such as random post, popular post and latest post will help increase your page views.

5.Email Newsletters
Have a good list of emails? You can spread your latest updates by blasting an email to all your subscribed list!

6.Comment on other blogs/ forums!
Leave a relevant and useful comment on blogs and forums. This can be useful and can increase the visibility of your links and driving traffic into your blog post. This method can also increase your SEO.

7. Follow-up Post
Follow-up post means that you continued from where you first started off from that particular topic. Useful in a sense that you will be able to not only provide useful and more insightful information on that particular topic, but by providing internal links to your relevant post (Stated in No. 4) you can increase your page views as well.

8. Advertising
Let just say you have just done a very good post that your extremely proud of and you think it deserve more attention and money to promote that particular post, you can submit your link to AdWords or StumbleUpon mini ads to promote it.
If you want to promote for free, you can try a manual traffic exchange - Click Here
Traffic Exchange are something for you to exchange your traffic by visiting the other persons website and they will visit your as well. Useful method for gaining traffic, (With some effort) for free if you have the spare time everyday.

Hope you enjoy this post and what do you think of it? Have you tried traffic exchange? What are your personal thoughts? Share them here!

Protect your copyrighted work by disabling the copy function

I am sure that a lot of you are bloggers and would like to protect your copyrighted work without letting other people to copy your work by disabling right click and highlighting. Here is a solution. (This is for blogspot)
  1. Go to Layouts
  2. Click add a new gadget
  3. Select Html/Javascript (In this case we are using a Javascript)
  4. When the blank layout appears, add the following code snippet into it and leave the title blank:
<script type="text/javascript">
var omitformtags=["input", "textarea", "select"]
omitformtags=omitformtags.join("|")
function disableselect(e){
if (omitformtags.indexOf(e.target.tagName.toLowerCase())==-1)
return false
}
function reEnable(){
return true
}
if (typeof document.onselectstart!="undefined")
document.onselectstart=new Function ("return false")
else{
document.onmousedown=disableselect
document.onmouseup=reEnable
}
</script>

Should work if you followed the steps correctly.

For hand coded websites using dreamweaver:
Try implementing this on your blog! If you own a website and not a blog, just copy this Javascript above the </body> tag

For WordPress,
Try installing this plugin called Wp-Copyright Pro!. This will allow deselection of text, prevents right click, protect from iframes and drag and drop photos. At the same time, this has no problem with search engines at all! So give it a try!

Scraper sites, what are they? Is your content being plagiarized? Find out here!

Scraper site are spam websites that copies from other websites content without permission using web scraping software.
Scraper sites are now increasing at an alarming rate and are even catching up on the search engine rankings of the original website. Open source content are normally the victims to this threat.

What are Scraper site made for? Why copy all the content from an open source and then re-post it in hopes of getting more traffic and higher rankings than the original websites?
The answer to this is very simple, they are made to make money through advertisements by chucking them to the website on every possible way.

Scraper sites itself is illegal, or most of it as even if the content has been licensed a GNU Free Documentation License and Creative Commons ShareAlike. This doesn't mean they can just copy freely, they will need to include a link back to the author of the original post. If not that is illegal and legal threat can be carried out to take down the contents of the website.
An example of a scraper site:

What sort of advertisement services will they normally use? Well normally they will use:

Infolinks (Ads that appear on links)
Google Adsense: (Both banners and text ads)
Chitika: (These normally run as alternatives to Google Adsense or with Google Adsense)
Adscend Media: (Usually the interstitial,  pop-up links or under pop-up links)
Domain Hijacking
Another thing is that they will wait for existing domains to expire. There are a few places they can wait for expiring domains and once they expire, web scrapers will immediately jump and the chance to buy that domain, hoping that not only it can ride on it's coat tails and continue from where it left off but using the fame and rank that the domain name has achieved, they stand a higher chance of outlasting the original contents from which they copied from. This is also known as domain hijacking (Although I wouldn't really call that as they didn't actually "steal" it)

Some scraper sites also made use of free sub domains such as:
  • Co.CC
  • Co.Cu
  • .blogspot
  • .weebly
  • .webs
To copy all their content from, thus degrading the quality and the name that these sub domains have acquired.
It is easy to check if your website has been scraped,here are a few places to check:

Feedburner
Feedburner flags every unusual activity on your feed and reports them to you on the Analyze tab. Check them occasionally for any unusual activity at your feed and the domain using your feed.

Google Webmaster Tools
Check for any site that is linking to your page. If you saw mass linkings from a particular website domain, visit it, it could be a scraper site.

If your blog that is on Blogspot and found that your contents has been scraped , you may report them to Google here: Click Here

If yours is not a blog but a website, you may report them here at these two places:
This is web pages for websites- Click Here
If the website is using Google Adsense- Click Here

It is alright if someone just copied a thing or two from you such as pictures so long as they are for educational purposes. No one will blame you or take much notice. However, if it is the entire content, (Not to mention the entire blog or website) it is time to make a complaint.

Well, that's all for Scraper sites, if you have any comments, feel free to drop one here. I'll love to hear from you!

Extension on my VIP post on to start a blog shop

So long... I think I can be the next author of the dummies book, on Blog Shop A-Z. ^^
An extension of my previous post, over here, I am going to continue on Blog Shop!

Continuation...

11. In depth on Disclaimers, Privacy Policy and Terms and Condition
You often see them, but what do they mean? These are meant to prevent you from 3 things:
  • Miscommunication
  • Prevent you from getting into legal trouble
  • Ensure safety among your customers.

Like my blog, you can see some Disclaimers and DMCA. This is to protect me from getting into any legal trouble that I don't need. (I am already having trouble with A.maths...)

These terms place trust among your customers and security with their information. Let us break it down to you:

-Disclaimers
They are there to ensure that you will not get into any legal trouble, but normally this is to prevent miscommunication. Here is a snippet of my disclaimer:
"We give no warranty and accepts no responsibility or liability for any misuse of the software or information. "
This is mainly used to prevent miscommunication or some falsification in your post.

-Privacy Policy
Privacy policy, this term itself is self-explanatory. Meaning that how will you handle you customers or buyers information. Will you ensure that their information will be secure? Some things such as address are not to be something for you to reveal.

-Terms and Conditions
Probably the most important thing you will have to have if you are thinking of starting a business. This will prevent you from getting into any legal trouble. Like "acceptance of use" that sort of thing. So it will be good to think it through this first before you even start you sell your items.

12. Allow something we call review products
Review products can be something like podcast or audio or even a testimonial (A podcast or audio will be a little more realistic). This will allow your customers to give their review in exchange for a cheaper price or even a free product. Very useful and if the customers are truly satisfied, they might even help to spread the word for you! An investment I'll say.

13. Consider to have a .Com domain instead of a sub domain  ".blogspot " or ".livejournal."
This is also considered as a part of SEO. Search engines tend to rank your blog shop higher when you have your own domain instead of a sub domain.  What's more, it will also give people the impression that your blog shop is doing well to be able to afford a domain. (Although the domain is cheap on blogger, $10 per year)

14. Run Google Ads (Something more of a bonus :D, although not recommended)
Google ads, as you might know, are something to boost your income, although I have tried applying for it, it was denied due to insufficient content (Don't see why, during my submission I have up to 60 over post). Displaying Google Ads is one thing, however some blogshops are quite reluctant to have ads due to the loss of SEO. (This is true) Having ads equals to having tons of links to other website and might cause search engines to rank you down. Having too much ads directs attention away (However, Google ads restrict you to have only 3 ads per page) Most blog shops that DO run ads, but kept to maximum 1 per page.

15.Avoid Copyright infringement ( VERY IMPORTANT)
Now this is EXTREMELY important. Copyright infringement can cause your entire shop to collapse if they decide to carry out their legal threats. Which is why you see that my blog has a DMCA. For pictures, since you are using it for commercial purpose, stockphotos will not be of much use, you WILL have to supply your own photos. Modelling for clothes or accessories will have to be you, your family, friends or whoever. Avoid claiming that the product you sell is yours, include the supplier name and the company that produces that product.

That's all for this post for this series, might have more. So look forward to it!

Interested in starting a Blog Shop? Read here for some tips! (Very in depth-VIP)

A lot of people are now starting something we call Blog Shop. At my country, during this 1 week holiday. I have seen some of my friends selling some items on blogs. Some don't though. I have one friend selling custom made fingerboards. Some of them selling accessories.

There is also a sharp increase in the number of Blog Shoppers, and blog shops. However, with so many blog shops competing with one another, it is quite hard to get your blog shop noticed. Especially if you are competing with around the world. For us, our country is considerably small, so delivery island wide is possible. What about other countries? So here are some tips for setting up a blog shop.

1. First and foremost, you MUST have the commitment before you even think of starting a blog shop.
Having the commitment to start a blog shop is a must. So you will have the willingness to continue. Most blog shops fail to see this point and this has resulted some people to discontinue their shop as they:

  • Found it meaningless to have a shop if there are no people buying.
  • Cannot keep up with studies and work.
  • Stressful to keep up with orders.
  • No one is even visiting your blog shop
  • They are bored and cannot wait
These are one of the few conditions that causes blog shops to fail. I myself intend not to start a blog shop but may intend to go into affiliate marketing (Maybe). So commitment is important to keep a blog going

2. Make sure your blog is navigable, and the theme is suitable for your blog shop.
Ever heard of first impression? Another important aspect of attracting visitors, having a good organized blog keeps your visitors or buyers browsing through your contents. A few widgets to help with that. Saw my contents page? Click Here.
This is a good way to categorize your post with labels, known as accordation menu, or accordion if you would prefer. This may require you to go into the murky world of HTML codes. However, it would be worth the results.
As for the template, having one like mine would be ideal. As it gives a thumbnail of your products with a summary text and a read more button. My template is a fully SEO optimized template, designed for easier viewing and fast load time. Blogger itself is already a SEO optimized service itself, it is up to you on how to maximize it. For more information on how to optimize your website to the fullest, visit here: Click Here

3.Sell unique products
Well, on my country, more than 90% of the blog shop sells, clothes, apparels accessories as such. (Only my friend who made the difference of selling custom made fingerboards and it is quite trendy nowadays...) Uniqueness is what separates you from the world of blog sphere, at the same time it also rules out competition. Giving you a high chance of succeeding.

4. Product thumbnails and description
"Super grippy and good pacing . Great for flip tricks and accuracy . Free Stickers !
10 SGD for 4 tapes."

Singaporean only: Visit Jewel3ox fingerboards (remember when placing orders, please tell him the my blog name and say it is from his friend IMPORTANT.)

This is an example of a product thumbnail and description.
Provide these useful information and at the same time keep them short and sweet:
-Product information
-How does it work
-If it is dressing or apparels, which size would you have the most stock of.
-Accessory wise, provide some information like, where are they made of. Having big country names such as Japan adds quality to the product. (If it is china it will probably shun users away :D)

5. Mailing List (Or better known as subscriber feed)
Have a list to keep users updated on when more stock is going to come or are you adding more products?

6. Create forms for user to place orders
You can't possibly place your email on your blog, you will risk getting spammed by users! A better safer way is to use EMS (Email me form) May require you to go into coding a little but it is worth it. It also has a captcha system to stop spam.

7.Keep to the subject of your blog. (Very Important)
The most important thing is probably to keep to the subject of your blog. Like my blog is more of giving blogging tips and some other technical tutorials. Sometimes like premium accounts is just to fill in the space :) Anyway back to topic, keeping to the subject of your blog is important. So your buyers will know what to expect from you. (Don't forget, you are not starting a department store, you are starting a blog shop)

8.Disclaimers, feedbacks, Terms and conditions, and privacy policy.
Such things are important. You may only be starting a small blog shop, but so long it is anything involving money, you cannot afford to make any miscommunication. This will make your customers and buyers lose trust in your service and if they start gossiping, you may as well close down your shop. So want me to explain in depth on Disclaimers, and TOC and privacy policy? I will post it after this. Now feedbacks are something to improve your quality of service and by making adjustments to your customers ways. You may start seeing more traffic and buyers!

9. Use safe payment processor
For Singapore, most of it might be through meet-up or self-service and payments made mostly in cash. However, as you business expands, might be a good idea to start using electronic transactions. For example, Paypal. They support transaction for POSB, UOB as such for our country. This can also make your customers feel safe when purchasing goods and won't allow anyone to hijack their information.

10. A partner
A partner to help with delivery of goods maybe? or maybe someone who can help you maintain his/her blog shop in exchange for a share of the revenue? As your business expands, you might require all these in order to keep up with the quality standards when it comes to sales.

Now I know this is way too long and I am going to categorize it under Blog Shop. Want to know more? Wait and find out!
